Dancers step up for opening ceremony
Published: Wednesday 29th June 2011
Around 100 local dancers have lined up to audition for the opening ceremony of the Games.A casting call was put out for street and highland dancers to take part in a spectacular display that will fuse the contemporary and traditional.
Choreographer, Daniel Brawley, a Lanarkshire lad himself, has a strong idea of what the opening ceremony should convey.Daniel said: "This is all about showing the world what we're made of. We're proud of our heritage and we're relevant to the 21st Century. The dance will be a strong, energetic and original expression of local pride.
"The street dancers were put through their paces at the event staged at Motherwell College in a demanding audition that yielded 64 dancers for the opening ceremony. They will join 40 elite highland dancers at the opening ceremony at Firpark Stadium on Thursday 4 August, along with a mass cast of around 400 P5, 6 and 7 Lanarkshire school children and a spectacular mass Highland Fling with 100 dancers.
Natasha Guinnessy, North Lanarkshire Council's Dance Development Officer, said: "These were very successful auditions and a great indication of the numbers and calibre of dancers we have in Lanarkshire."I'm really looking forward to working with the team to prepare for the opening ceremony."Natasha also had a message for those who did not make the cut this time, "Thank you for taking part, don't be disheartened, and keep dancing."Tickets for the opening ceremony and full details of all the events will be available soon.
